Preparing For The Storm

Hurricane Season 2018 is upon us.Image title

The official start date is June 1st, but we've already witnessed one named storm make landfall on the Gulf Coast during this last week of May. Seems we may have a busy season on our hands.  If it's going to be a busy season, we better be prepared.

Here are some tips to help you stay in ready mode.

  • Where to go - Plan an evacuation destination, whether is an out of town family member or a hotel, campsite, etc. . Know the  local evacuation routes. Research local shelters that may be available.

    • Communication - Make sure everyone in your family knows the above details. Cell phone towers WILL BE overloaded in the event of a storm. Assign tasks to those can help.

  • Supplies - whether you decide to evacuate or stay, you must have supplies in stock. These include batteries, flashlights, drinking water, non-perishable foods, first aid kits, prescription medications, cash money. If you make the decision to stay home & ride out the storm, please ensure you have enough stock for several days.

  • Important Documents/Valuables - keep any important documents and/or valuables in a waterproof lock box or safe. Keep it in a specific and accessible location if you must evacuate.  Move any other Important items to higher areas in your home, preferably the attic or high shelves

  • Home preparation

    • Trim or remove dead branches from larger plants and trees.

    • Make sure gutters are secure and free of debris.

    • Check that shutters are in working order or fit your windows with storm boards that are stored with easy access in case of storm.

    • Home generators - please remember to keep these OUTSIDE of your home and a safe distance away from any window/doors.

      • purchase one if you can

      • if you own one, start it up to ensure it is in working order. Also stock up on fuel to run it for a few days in case of storm.

    • Make sure all furniture is taken in or secured in the event of a tropical storm/hurricane warning.

  • In the event of a storm that we are in the direct path of, please stay tuned to your local weather channels. They will be able to provide the most up to date information.

These are just a few things to get you on your way to being prepared. Most local news channels will be airing their own informational segments within the next few days to help everyone get and stay prepared.  You can also click here --> http://https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php <-- for more information to help you be ready.
